Mark Twain had a lot of wonderful witty things to say about New England weather, and the most relevant (and true) for today would certainly be this one, from a speech he gave in 1876:
One of the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty of it.
Oh, boy, is he so right. Although the cold and rain was predicted, as was the high winds, I don’t think anyone thought that we would have any appreciable snow here in Boston today, and yet we got enough to turn the roads into quite a slushy mess.
I had to go to a training class tonight at police headquarters and snow was already coming down when I arrived at the station.
Looking out the front of the station, it’s really coming down.
Luckily I remembered that I had put my good scraper/brush in the “boot” of the Mini, the cargo compartment underneath the floor in the back. I dug it out and used it to clean off the car after the training was over. I immediately loaned it to my friend and fellow volunteer officer Derrick who was parked right behind me. The snow was coming down hard enough to limit visibility to maybe 50 or 60 yards by the time I drove home. We’ll see what is still here in the morning but it shouldn’t be too much of a shoveling job.
Probably 2 inches on the walk by this point. The truck is starting to get buried.
The only thing that really bothers me is that I will be shocked if any of my plants survived. I wasn’t able to bring any of the herbs in. Thankfully they had survived the cold nights up until now (thanks to covering them up) but I didn’t get back in time to do anything to them before they got all covered up with snow and ice. I’ll see if we have any survivors tomorrow.
