I think there may have actually been danger of having some sort of geek singularity of awesomeness form on stage.
But before I tell you what I am talking about, some context.
As I mentioned previously, I have been spending some time looking for things related to ASOIAF/GoT to read/watch now that the show’s Season Four is over.
There is this thing called w00tstock. It is, in essence, a celebration of geek culture through music. It has been going on since 2009, when creators Adam Savage, Wil Wheaton and Paul and Storm first brought it to life. The following year it came to Boston on Halloween, a night that I was working my first Halloween detail, and so I missed it. That was the only year it was held here, I think, as most of the time it is held on the West Coast . But it is amazing and hilarious and a good time is generally had by all. The one this year is in just a few days, in San Diego. Obviously no chance of going this year.
But last year’s event (also in San Diego, also at Comic Con) was one to remember. Paul and Storm have this song called “Write like the Wind”, which is a tongue-in-cheek song about getting GRRM to write faster, something many of his fans have complained about for some time. They opened the w00tstock 5.0 show with the song and ended up having a couple of surprise guests join them on stage. GRRM himself showed up, along with noted author, geek icon, and scolder of obnoxious GRRM fans Neil Gaiman who basically gave an earful to those impatient fans through Paul and Storm. Hilarity ensues.
It’s good to see that GRRM has a sense of humor about it all, and throwing Neil Gaiman in there just made it about as perfect as perfect nerd bliss could be.
